Welcome to the start of the 2023 – 2024 season. WAVE is looking forward to the season ahead, to seeing each athlete and team improve and to defend our championships at every level.

September has traditionally been rocky at first. Last year it was Ottawa U’s front doors to the pool and this year Ottawa U strikes again with a full-on pool closure. This will prove to hopefully be a minor delay.

We have a busy start for our athletes and families in October. Our JWs and 13Us will need to hit the ground running as we prepare for the meets in October. That means having all the equipment ready for each practice and getting the required insurance.

Lisa, Rodrigo and I understand that the leap from Mini WAVEs to Junior WAVEs and from Junior WAVEs to 13U can be overwhelming. We will be having meetings soon to address these concerns and help make the transition easier.

WAVE is a competitive program and it requires a commitment that will only reap rewards for years to come. WAVE believes in entering swim competitions as soon as possible. It’s the only way to get faster. There may be a few bumps along the way, but that’s nothing in comparison to the bumps felt as a water polo player whose team depends on their competitive drive and athletic abilities to make that shot, stop that ball or come back from a deficit. We have to prepare our young ones for that.

Here are the swim meets for the Fall. WAVE focuses on attending small meets in the Eastern Ontario region, so that there is little disruption to practice time.

October 15 – Fall Five – Brockville – this is a fun Sunday morning meet. We’ll be taking athletes from JWs and 13Us that are ready for competition, mostly athletes that competed last year.

October 21-22 – NKB Invitational – Nepean – this is a two day meet at the Nepean Sportsplex. There may be a water polo tournament in Montreal this weekend, so the meet will be for those JWs and 13Us not attending the water polo tournament. Nepean provides the best viewing opportunities and comfortable seating.

October 28- Halloween Howler – Perth – this is a fun morning meet for everyone from 13Us and JWs. You’ll be home in the early afternoon to rest up for evening practice.

November 3 – 5 – Snowflake – Cornwall – things will start to get a little more serious at this meet as we get closer to Regionals, but it’s with the other small clubs from around the Ottawa Valley.

December 9 – Candy Cane – Perth – back to Perth for the very popular Candy Cane meet. WAVE is only allowed to bring 30 athletes to this event.

Do you have to attend all the meets? No. All athletes are to attend the Halloween Howler in Perth and at least one other in the Fall.

At the upcoming meetings, I will be discussing how events are chosen for these meets and what to expect at these meets.

  • The JWs will be meeting on Google Meet Sunday, September 17th at 7:30 PM.
  • The 13Us will be meeting on Google Meet, Thursday, September 21st at 7:00 PM.

Watch Amilia for those meeting details.
