BOYS COMPETITIVE WATER POLO

Overview of our Boys Competitive Program

Our competitive programs are for athletes that have a strong swimming ability, demonstrate the desire, skills and commitment to move on more step up in their water polo sport career. We offer competitive water polo for 12U categories all the way up to 19U. The competitive programs takes into account an athlete’s skill level, strength, maturity and previous water polo or swimming experience. Depending on the athlete’s age and the coaches’ decision, they can register in the U12, U14, U16, U19 or Major League (Senior) Competitive program. Our club Head Coach sends an invitation out to certain athletes to join this program throughout the season and who they believe are ready for the next challenge. At this level, players learn and develop higher understanding of strategy, team tactics, all while learning to train and to compete. Our programs includes various wellness activities such as yoga, virtual zoom sessions, nutrition, dry-land training, and mental training workshops.

Why Boys Need Competitive Water Polo?

Once our athletes graduate from Splash Polo and PLAY! Water Polo, they want something more, and mostly, they want competitive water polo. Capital Wave’s competitive program allows them to grow as competitive athletes and participate in various competitions. Coaches push and work the athletes to their abilities and promote the (LTAD) Long-Term Athlete Development model created by Water Polo Canada. At Capital Wave, athletes are able to compete at the U12, U14 , U16, U19, and Major League (senior) level. The competitive practices help shape the athletes into great shape physically and mentally. Our Olympic and international experienced coaches help athletes succeed and help them reach their goals. Some of the greatest benefits of participating in competitive water polo program are the life skills of time management, self-discipline, physical fitness and sportsmanship that athletes will learn.

Lastly, as athletes progress in the sport and get recognized Provincially and Nationally, grants and athlete support programs from the Ontario Athlete Assistance Program are available throughout the years.

Our 12U/14U Boys Program

Our 12U/14U program introduces athletes to competitive water polo and is the first stage in our competitive stream. The focus is on continuing to develop fundamental swimming and water polo skills, while learning simple game strategy and fitness required to succeed in competitive water polo. Graduates of PLAY! Polo are ideal for this program as they have the necessary fundamentals needed for this program. Upon invitation, an evaluation of the player’s current abilities and overall potential will first be performed by the head coach to ensure that the athlete is ready for the competitive program. Athlete’s in this level are able to play in regional, provincial, and national tournaments. The 12U/14U competitive program trains 3-4 times a week and includes dry land training. Our 12U/14U Semi Competitive group trains half as many times.

Our 16U/19U Boys Program

Our 16U/19U program are the following stages in our competitive stream. The focus is on providing athletes with high intensity training, mastering individual skills and positional training, all while continuing game strategy concepts. This program also prepares and helps athletes reach Team Ontario, National Teams or post-secondary institutions of their choice (in Canada or the USA). Athlete’s in this level are able to play in regional, provincial, national, and even international tournaments. Participation is also expected in the Provincial (OWPL) and National Leagues (NCL). What’s Next?

Our goal is to support and help as many athletes that want to be accepted onto Team Ontario and/or Team Canada. We also support athletes who want to pursue University scholarships to go play in the NCAA league or in the OUA league. Capital Wave has the largest Ottawa representation in Team Ontario on both the girls and boys teams every year. Many of our athletes are playing in the OUA league in Ontario and some are in the US with scholarships playing in the NCAA Division I League. Several of our players have also made Youth, Junior, and Senior National Teams. If you are interested in continuing to play in the senior league with our Major League team, please get in touch with our head coach here. Our current Senior Women’s National Team goalkeeper, Jessica Gaudreault, is a Capital Wave alumni.

“We wanted our child to continue the competitive stream, so we chose Capital Wave’s competitive program. When it came down to choosing a competitive boys team, Capital Wave was the philosophy we wanted to follow. I’ve never been part of a club that values family and cared about each other as much as they do. My son absolutely loves his team, the bond he has with his team, and the hard work he puts in. Thank you Capital Wave.”
