We have been notified that an athlete in the Junior Waves program has tested positive for Covid 19 today (Tuesday Dec 14). The athlete felt symptoms Monday and was kept home from practice. It is unknown at this time if it is the Omicron variant.
If your athlete was at a Junior Waves practice Friday Dec 10, Saturday Dec 11 (late) or Sunday Dec 12, the athlete may be considered a close or high-risk contact to someone who has tested positive. The board of directors has been in contact with Ottawa Public Health (OPH) and we are awaiting further information from OPH and will pass along any information we receive. That said, depending on the assessment of OPH, you may or may not be contacted by them as a close contact. As an example, Coach Fraser took a rapid antigen test this evening and the result was negative.
According to OPH, all high-risk contacts should go for COVID-19 testing regardless of vaccination status, but the timing of the testing is important. The date you go for testing depends on two factors:
- If you have COVID-19 like symptoms
- When you last had contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19.
If you have COVID-19 like symptoms, you should go for testing right away.
If you do not have COVID-19 like symptoms, get tested seven or more days after the last contact you had with the person that tested positive for COVID-19.
Please consult with the OPH Covid page for further information: https://www.
Out of an abundance of caution in an effort to keep our extended Capital Wave families as safe as possible with the holidays coming up and with many families looking forward to spending time with relatives who may be part of a higher risk population, we are suspending practices as of today, December 14th, 2021 at 9:30pm. Practices are scheduled to resume January 3rd, 2022. Practice time missed this week will be made up over the rest of the season.
If any athlete should test positive within the next 10 days, you must let the club know at covid@capitalwave.ca
While unfortunate, this was not completely unexpected with schools seeing increasing case numbers.
We will be in touch with any further information we receive.
I wish you all a very healthy and happy holiday season.
Kindest regards,
Jason
